Also protects your wetsuit so you don't get a huge hole in your butt (I've ripped my shorts but not wetsuit many times). Not to mention it makes you look just a bit better IMO. Surfers need to be streamlined in the water where as kiters don't. They also spend most of their time in the water where you can't see the legs anyway. No sense in comparing the two. To each his own.
