Contamination at Kite Beach??? - 2006/06/11 21:31 Yesterday we were at kite beach hanging out with our friends when this local guy comes up to us and says "Have you noticed all the feces in the ocean?" He tells us he got his dog out of the ocean quickly and has locked him in his truck. The guy thinks all the feces is from the homeless living in the bushes. Dave tells the guy that the wind has been onshore so the feces has probably blown in from all the sea turtles that live along Kanaha Beach. David said "the only way to be certain is to go to the shoreline and poke at the feces with a stick. If it's green on the inside than it is waste from the turtles, if not green then he should call the county and the health department. The local guy seemed amazed with the amount of information David offered. The guy and I went down to the shoreline and poked at some of the waste. David was right. The inside was bright green, due to the turtles having a diet of seaweed. The local guy was so relieved and happy to know his dog was safe to go back into the ocean.
