How to avoid getting scammed with a check!
There are quiet some stories nowadays about scams when trading gear.
The scam works like this:
The “buyer” sends you a check for your gear. He asks you to cash in the check, then ship the gear. The check will have a higher amount on it then agreed on for your gear.
The 2buyer” ask you to transfer the difference to his account.
After the deal is done and you transferred the amount, the whole check will be withdrawn from your account again. Especially checks from banks in Ireland can be taken back after 6 month it has been credited on your account!
To avoid getting scammed, pay attention to below listed warnings:
- the “buyer” will not negotiate about the price you want
- a personal story about his sick wife or someone from the family is told to get a deeper contact and trustworthy relationship to you.
- the buyer is based abroad
- the “buyer” will act correctly and trustworthy
- he talks about “goods/products”, not kites or boards, which a normal kiter would never do
- the amount on the check will be higher then your gear is worth. He says the check has been
Higher by mistake or mixed with another kite and sent the wrong one. After some discussions
he asks you to cash in the check and transfer the difference to his account
- the address where the gear has to be shipped to will only be told after asking several times. Consider it to be a faked address.
In general: do not accept any checks!!!
